Nomadtable has been working really well for me in the Balkans.
I second NomadTable! I used it in Bali recently and met a few people to do stuff with!
The best Hangouts alternative I found so far is Nomadtable… I put a pin on my favorite local bar, some people joined and had a blast. It also seems free so far so that's a plus as well.
In the cities I've used it, it's surprisingly popular. In fact, I just opened it up, and there are about 40+ open events near me to join.
Just organized my first meetup in Madrid and it was actually pretty fun! Tons of stuff going on.
I have used it, it's safe in my opinion. Most, if not all, activities are in a public setting, plus if you don't want to stay, you can leave.
I'm in my early 30s and did not have trouble finding meetups that were mostly people (often mostly women) in that age group. It felt safe enough and I did not feel the need to pay for the premium version!
I have used it in Europe (the free version, I've never tried premium). I met some other women and had a fun time. It can definitely be hit and miss though.
I had amazing hangouts from nomadtable both in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Nomadtable is pretty good from my experience.
the honest part: common criticisms
No app is perfect, and we'd rather you hear it from us. These are the complaints we see most, and what's in the app to address them.
- Some activities are flaky — people join and don't show up.
- Activities have an RSVP, and after each one, attendees confirm who actually came and can give each other a thumbs up. That attendance history is visible, so reliable people stand out.
- Some men use it like a dating app and DM women.
- Nomadtable is not a dating app and the guidelines are enforced. Messages are screened by AI moderation for flirty and sexual content, anyone can be reported or blocked, and women can create women-only activities and filter to see only women and non-binary travelers.
- Smaller cities can be quiet.
- Activity is highest in major travel hubs. Trip timelines let you see who will be in your next city on the same dates and join a group chat before you arrive, which helps in quieter places.
- Big group chats can get chaotic.
- Group chats now support polls so a group can agree on a plan quickly, and activity chats are separate from city-wide chats.
- Verification isn't mandatory.
- Photo verification is optional, reviewed by a person, and shows a badge on the profile — look for it before meeting someone one-on-one.
