Most "best travel apps" lists give you 40 apps and no opinions. Solo travel needs fewer apps, chosen well — because when you're on your own, your phone is your navigator, your bank, your translator, and your way to find dinner company. Here's the kit, one app per job. (Disclosure: we make the first one. It's first because it solves the problem solo travelers ask us about most.)

1. nomadtable — so you're not eating dinner alone

The thing nobody warns first-time solo travelers about isn't getting lost — it's the third night, sitting alone with room service, wondering why everyone else has someone. Nomadtable fixes that. Open the map and see what other travelers near you are doing today — dinner at 7, a sunset hike, a bar night — and join. Add your upcoming trips and see who else will be in that city on your dates.

It's the largest app built just for meeting fellow travelers (2M+ users, 4.7★ from 20,000+ App Store ratings), free to use, works whether you stay in hostels, hotels, or Airbnbs, and includes women-only activities. It's not a dating app — that's enforced. For alternatives and a full comparison, see the best apps to meet people while traveling.

2. google maps + citymapper — getting around

Download offline maps for every city before you leave home. Star your accommodation, the nearest pharmacy, and a couple of cafés with Wi-Fi. In big cities, Citymapper's transit directions beat Google's — exits, which carriage to board, real-time disruptions.

3. rome2rio — between cities

Type two places, get every way to travel between them with rough prices and times. Then book directly with the operator.

4. wise or revolut — money

Real exchange rates, cheap ATM withdrawals, instant card freezing. Keep it as a second card stored separately from your main one so a lost wallet doesn't end your trip.

5. airalo or holafly — data on landing

Install an eSIM at home, switch it on when you land, and you have maps and ride-hailing before you leave the airport. Solo, that's a safety feature, not a convenience.

6. google translate — language

Download the offline language pack. Camera mode for menus and signs, conversation mode for pharmacies and taxi drivers.

7. hostelworld or booking.com — where you stay decides who you meet

If you want built-in social life, book a social hostel (search reviews for "social" and "atmosphere"). Hostelworld adds hostel chats when you book. If you prefer privacy, book flexible private rooms and get your social life from activities instead — see how to meet people in hostels.

8. find my or google maps sharing — safety check-ins

Share your live location with one trusted person for the length of the trip. Nomadtable also lets you share live location inside a chat when you're finding a group. More in solo travel safety tips that actually matter.

9. your airline's app

Gate changes and delays hit your phone before the departure board. Turn on notifications.

10. a notes app with your documents

Passport photo, insurance policy number, accommodation addresses, emergency contacts — saved offline. Boring, and the one you'll be most grateful for.

apps you can skip

  • Five different "travel buddy" apps. Social apps only work where people are. Pick the one with the biggest community and one backup.
  • Dating apps "for friends." Mixed intentions make things awkward fast. Use apps built for friendship.
  • Heavy itinerary planners. Solo travel's best feature is changing plans. A notes list of things you want to do is enough.
